Culture as Method for Change

2017 November

Culture as Method for Change is a project initiated by Kultura in Motion and Open Place, supported by the Swedish Institute in support of strengthening democracy, freedom of expression and human rights.

The intention is to empower cultural workers in their daily work in the community and to strengthen their ability to be a driving force for democratisation. To achieve this a one day workshop Missing Links for 30 participants is organised on the topic of curatorship and audience development. This will offer the unique opportunity to look at a spectrum of challenges faced by cultural workers, get acquainted with the available methods and tools used by cultural institutions in their work with local communities to help fulfil their role as drivers of development in the society. Two international experts will be joining to share their best practices from abroad.

Together with the participants, we will look at examples that inspire us and talk about practices that are characterized by inclusiveness and democracy, seek to interact with different age and social groups and interdisciplinary cooperation. These examples together with the individual experiences of the participants will form the basis for the preparation of proposals that can be used in the work of museums, cultural institutions, and by individual cultural workers.

As part of the workshop, we are looking to invite a Swedish expert to be part of our daily programme. The Swedish expert will be accompanied by an international speaker from Easter Europe during the workshop. Given time availability of the speaker, the stay offers the unique opportunity to get familiar with the city, its cultural life, and the region as part of an organised tour.

10 May 2018

9:00am - 5:00pm
Art Museum of Poltava. N. Yaroshenko, str. Evropeyska, 5

The workshop intends to provide the opportunity to examine the range of issues faced by cultural workers and to identify the most suitable solutions. The participants will be introduced to available practical methods and tools used by cultural institutions in Sweden, Belarus and across Ukraine to drive the development of their audiences and the local community.

We will together with the participants review case studies that inspire us. This includes looking at curatorial practices characterised by inclusiveness and democracy, promote interaction with different age and social groups, and support interdisciplinary collaborations. By combining the case studies with practical exercises during the workshop, the participants will be equipped with set toolkits that may be used in work at cultural institutions such as museums, as well as by individual cultural workers.

Experts Anneli Bäckman and Anna Karpenko will present and share their experiences from Sweden and Belarus respectively during the workshop.

Anneli Bäckman: Shifting perspectives in contemporary art practices and work in communities.
Anneli will share her experience and work with Botkyrka Konsthall on audience and community development through the use of contemporary art methods. She will discuss the importance of self-reflection and the use of failure as a process of moving forward to learn and acquire new knowledge. Anneli will identify methods that may be applied while working with communities to implement cultural projects. In addition, a number of relevant Swedish art and education initiatives will be presented that intend to engage with different age and social groups.
